- Gas cooker ignition fault
- Gas hob not working
Applies to
- gas hobs
- cookers with gas hob
Resolution
If your gas hob is not sparking, won’t ignite, or keeps tripping the fuse or electrics, this is often caused by an installation or electrical connection issue.
These faults are especially common when:
- installing a new gas hob
- reconnecting a hob after moving
This guide explains the most common causes and what you should check before calling an engineer.
Common Gas Hob Problems After Installation
1. Gas hob not sparking
- No clicking sound when turning the control knob
- Burner does not ignite
2. Gas hob trips the fuse / electrics
- Cooker causes the fuse box (consumer unit) to trip
- Power cuts out when trying to use the hob
When does this apply?
A new installation means:
- a brand new gas hob connected for the first time
- an existing appliance plugged into a different socket or circuit
In these cases, the issue is usually related to incorrect installation or wiring.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
1. Check the plug socket
Plug in another appliance (e.g. kettle).
- If it works → socket is OK
- If it doesn’t → the socket may be faulty
Contact a qualified electrician.
2. Check the fuse or breaker
Look at your fuse box / consumer unit.
- Reset the breaker if it has tripped
- Check the plug fuse (if applicable)
If the fuse keeps tripping, do NOT continue using the appliance.
3. Check if the hob was installed correctly
Common installation issues:
- incorrect electrical connection
- poor earthing (grounding)
- damaged power cable
Contact the installer who fitted the appliance.
4. Contact professional support
If the issue continues:
- contact an Authorised Service Centre
- request a qualified service engineer visit
Safety Advice
- Do NOT attempt electrical or gas repairs yourself
- Gas work should always be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Electrical issues must be handled by a qualified electrician
Is it safe to keep using the hob if it trips the fuse?
No - repeated tripping indicates an electrical fault and should be checked by a professional.
